MARYLAND STUDENTS GET FREE TUTORING SCHOLARSHIPS
Local Tutoring, Sports Firms Team Up For Homework & Hoops
Bethesda, MD, March 10, 2010 – Two Montgomery County children will receive tutoring scholarships this spring from a new learning program. Homework and Hoops, an after-school program combining physical activity with tutoring by schoolteachers, debuts in April in Gaithersburg according to founding businesses Ashley Tutors and One-on-One Sports.
“Homework and Hoops is our way of helping kids meet First Lady Michelle Obama’s challenge of tackling childhood obesity,” said One on One’s Washington, DC Regional Director Brett Isaacson. “Time needed for homework and studying for tests increases each spring, but that’s exactly when our children are ready to get outside and play.”
Combining tutoring with supervised play is better for children’s health and academics, according to Ashley Tutors CEO Josh Chernikoff. “Studies from Duke and the University of Oregon show this type of kinesthetic learning improves test scores and retained knowledge,” he said. “With supervised play and professional teachers, Montgomery County parents know that their children are learning, preparing for the end of the school year and having fun while exercising regardless of their skill level in sports.”
Homework and Hoops for elementary aged school students starts at Travillah Elementary School in Gaithersburg on April 5th. Parents interested in a scholarship can ask their child’s teacher or guidance counselor to nominate a student using a form on the company’s website. One boy and one girl student will be chosen for the inaugural 10 week session.
Scholarships are open to all Montgomery County students. The submission deadline is March 31, 2010.
