Ashley Tutors focuses on spelling at any age

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. – Ashley Tutors (http://www.ashleytutors.com) will be featured prominently in a WUSA9 News Now story discussing the importance of spelling, even when it comes to bus stop shelters along the streets of Washington, D.C.

9 News Now reporter Brittany Morehouse revealed a number of misspelled bus stop shelters, including one at the prominent corner of Massachusetts and Garfield.  Morehouse explained DC’s Department of Transportation is responsible for the shelters and the city contracts with Clear Channel to produce the structures.

Ashley Tutors founder Josh Chernikoff is not surprised about the misspellings on the shelters.  He believes spelling is getting lost along the way, especially with technology and smart phones.

“Certainly with the younger students we work with spelling is emphasized all the time,” Chernikoff said. “When you get into the middle and high school levels, spelling is not emphasized as much, and it’s the content of what you’re writing instead.”

“I think it’s being lost along the way because you don’t have to worry about it,” he continued, adding we all rely more on technology. “Microsoft Word, text messaging, Google will figure out exactly what you’re trying to say however you spell it.”
